# Test your on-call notifications

> Prove a page will reach you before you get paged for real.

Send a test notification through any contact method you've set up, and check it is set up correctly. The app test fires at the same urgency as a real page, so it also proves that pages get through Do Not Disturb on that phone.

## Send a test

1. Open [**User preferences → On-call notifications**](https://app.incident.io/~/user-preferences/on-call-notifications).
2. Find the contact method you want to check under **Contact methods**.
3. Click the bell **Send a test notification** button on that row.
4. For a phone number, choose **SMS** or **Phone call**.
5. Confirm with **Send test notification**.

You can also send a test from the mobile app, which goes to that device only.

<Note>
  The button appears on your own verified contact methods. If a row shows **Verify**, or a label such as **Not installed** or **Phone number blocked**, sort that out first and the button comes back.
</Note>

## What each test sends

| Contact method    | What arrives                                                                                                       |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| App (mobile push) | A push titled **Test Notification**, at real page urgency, to every device you're signed in on |
| Phone, SMS | A text reading "This is a test notification from incident-io" |
| Phone, phone call | A call that reads out "This is a test notification from incident.io" and hangs up. No keypress needed |
| Email | An email with the subject "Test on-call notification from incident.io" |
| Slack             | A direct message from the incident.io app                                                                          |
| Microsoft Teams   | A direct message from the incident.io app                                                                          |
| WhatsApp | A message that also states which urgencies your rules send to WhatsApp, or tells you that no rules point at it yet |

## What the app test proves

We send the app test at the same urgency as a real page: a critical alert on iOS, and your alarm sound on Android.

Send one with your phone locked and silenced. If it wakes you, you're set up correctly.

Responders in Mainland China should follow [Mobile app in China](/on-call/china-mobile-app).

## If a test doesn't arrive

**App.** Work through the [iOS](/on-call/ios-notifications#push-notifications) or [Android](/on-call/android-notifications#push-notifications) notification setup.

**Phone call or SMS.** If the test says the number opted out, text START to the number you received notifications from. Otherwise see [supported countries](/on-call/supported-countries) and [Call screening](/on-call/ios-notifications#call-screening).

**Slack or Microsoft Teams.** The test is a direct message, so it needs the incident.io app installed for your user.

**WhatsApp.** Start with [Why did verifying my WhatsApp number fail?](/on-call/whatsapp-verification-issues).
