# Mark alerts as noise

> Flag the alerts that waste your time with one click, then find them again in the alerts list and insights.

When an alert pages you for nothing, mark it as noise. It takes one click from Slack, Microsoft Teams, the dashboard or the mobile app, and gives you a record of which alerts your team thinks are a waste of time, so you know what to tune.

## How it works

Marking an alert as noise adds a `noise` tag to it. If the alert is part of a group, every alert in the group gets the tag. You can filter by the `noise` tag in the alerts list, saved views and insights. You can't rename or archive the `noise` tag.

## Mark an alert as noise

### In Slack and Microsoft Teams

Select **🔇 Mark as noise** on any of these messages:

* The alert message in your alert channel
* The alert group summary
* Escalation messages, both in channels and in direct messages

On a message with lots of buttons, **Mark as noise** moves into the **More actions** menu. Once someone marks the alert, the button goes away and the message shows who marked it.

### In the dashboard

Open the alert and select **Mark as noise**, next to the alert's notes. To mark several alerts at once, select them in the alerts list and select **Mark as noise** in the bar at the bottom of the page.

### In the mobile app

Open the alert or alert group and select **Mark as noise** in the **More options** menu.

### When you decline an incident

If you decline a triage incident that was created by an alert, the declined message asks whether the alert was noise. Select **Mark as noise** to mark it. We don't ask when an incident is declined automatically, for example because its alerts resolved.

## Undo a mark

Remove the `noise` tag from the alert, the same way you'd remove any other tag.

## Find your noisy alerts

* **Alerts list:** filter by the `noise` tag to see every alert your team has marked.
* **Insights:** the **Alerts marked as noise** section of the [Alerts dashboard](https://docs.incident.io/alerts/alert-insights.md) shows the alerts that get marked most often, grouped by alert title. An alert that keeps getting marked is a good candidate for tuning, rerouting or removing.

[Investigations](https://docs.incident.io/investigations/overview.md) also see when an alert has been marked as noise before, which helps them tell a real problem from a known noisy alert.

## Hide the button from alert messages

**Mark as noise** is an action in your [alert message templates](https://docs.incident.io/alerts/message-customization.md), and it's on by default. To remove it, or move it so it's more prominent, edit the template in Settings → Alert Slack messages, or Settings → Alert Teams messages if you use Microsoft Teams.
